What is PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme?
The PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme is a central government initiative designed to provide financial support to meritorious students pursuing higher education in quality institutions. It ensures that financial constraints do not prevent talented students from accessing quality higher education.

Financial Outlay and Coverage
- Total Outlay: ₹3,600 crore (2024-25 to 2030-31)
- Expected Beneficiaries: Nearly 7 lakh students
- Eligible Institutions: 1,425 Quality Higher Educational Institutions (QHEIs)
- Top 100 NIRF institutions
- Top 200 State Government institutions
- All Central Government Higher Educational Institutions
Loan Provisions
- No upper loan limit; sanctioned amount based on approved educational expenses
- Covers tuition, hostel, living costs, laptop, and related charges
- Credit Guarantee: 75% government credit guarantee for loans up to ₹7.5 lakh
- Interest Rate: Maximum EBLR + 0.5%
- Repayment Period: 15 years (excluding course period and 1-year moratorium)
- Availability: Through Scheduled Commercial Banks, RRBs, and Cooperative Banks
Interest Subvention Benefits
- 3% Interest Subvention: For students with annual family income up to ₹8 lakh on loans up to ₹10 lakh during moratorium period
- 100% Interest Subsidy: For students with income up to ₹4.5 lakh under PM-USP Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme (CSIS)
- Benefit can be availed only once for undergraduate, postgraduate, or integrated programme
Digital Platform
- PM Vidyalaxmi Portal: Unified digital platform for:
- Applying for loans
- Selecting banks
- Tracking applications
- Claiming interest subsidies
- Registering grievances
- PM Vidyalaxmi CBDC Wallet: For receiving subsidy payments before transfer to loan accounts
Eligibility Criteria
- Merit-based admission (excluding Management and NRI quotas)
- Admission to any of the 1,425 QHEIs
- Covers all eligible degree and diploma programmes

- In FY 2025-26, portal received 6,45,514 education loan applications across all schemes
- 1,10,667 applications submitted under PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme
- 70,852 loans sanctioned and 67,728 loans disbursed

- FY 2025-26 applications: 3,68,742 men, 2,76,764 women
