Design of the National Flag

Evolution of the Design

  • 1921: During the Indian National Congress (INC) session in Vijayawada, Venkayya designed and presented the Swaraj Flag on Khadi to Mahatma Gandhi
  • Original Draft Design:
  • Two horizontal bands: red and green (representing Hindu and Muslim communities)
  • Spinning wheel (Gandhi Charkha) at the centre
  • Gandhi's Modification: Added a white band (symbolizing peace) between red and green, retaining the charkha representing Swaraj and self-reliance

Formal Adoption

  • 1931: Design officially adopted by the INC, becoming the basis of the modern Indian Tricolour
  • 1947 (Post-Independence): An ad hoc committee of the Constituent Assembly recommended retaining the 1931 tricolor while replacing the Charkha with the Ashoka Chakra
  • 22nd July 1947: Constituent Assembly adopted the present National Flag
  • 15th August 1947: Officially became India's National Flag
