What is PRAXIS Mission?
PRAXIS stands for Planetary Rings Autonomous EXploration with In-situ Sampling. It is a revolutionary mission concept selected by NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program for Phase I funding in 2026.
Key Objectives
- First-ever collection of ring particles - Humanity has never directly touched or collected particles from a planetary ring
- Study rings around Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and smaller objects like Chariklo and Chiron
- Measure size, porosity, structure, and chemical composition of ring particles

Innovative Sampling Method
Instead of flying directly through the hazardous ring environment:
- Spacecraft would graze the ring plane
- Identify a suitable particle
- Conduct a touch-and-go sampling operation using a long, soft, deployable boom
- After analysis, spacecraft moves to another section or gap
Multi-Region Exploration
The mission allows scientists to compare particles from several different ring environments by repeating the sampling process across various sections and gaps in the rings.
