Reservoirs and Transmission
Animal Reservoirs

- Sheep and goats
- Carrier animals may remain asymptomatic while shedding bacteria through urine for prolonged periods
- Pathogenic leptospires persist in renal tubules and reproductive tract of infected animals
Mode of Transmission to Humans
- Direct contact: With infected animal urine through cuts, abrasions, or mucous membranes
- Indirect contact: Through contaminated water, soil, or food

- Weil's syndrome (jaundice, renal failure)
- Meningitis
- Pulmonary haemorrhage

- Severe indicator: Jaundice generally indicates severe disease
