Key Facts
- The 3rd International Bharat 6G Symposium 2026 was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Communications in New Delhi.
- It was organised by the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA), a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together governments, industry, academia and global technology alliances to advance 6G development.
- B6GA signed 5 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with:
- GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association)
- one6G Association
- GTI Alliance
- 6G Industry Forum
- VoICE
- Key Highlight: A joint report was released to mark one year of progress since the New Delhi Declaration was adopted at the International Bharat 6G Symposium 2025.
- The report promotes secure, open, interoperable, inclusive and sustainable 6G through global cooperation.
Background: Bharat 6G Vision
- Launched in 2023, the Bharat 6G Vision aims to make India a front-line contributor in the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.
- India is building a 6G-ready ecosystem through indigenous research, startup support and industry–academia collaboration.
Three Pillars of the Ecosystem
- 100 Fifth-Generation (5G) Labs: Promote telecom research, experimentation and skill development.
- Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF): Supports indigenous research and development in telecom technologies, including 5G and 6G.
- Bharat 6G Alliance: Brings together industry, telecom providers, academia and research institutions to promote indigenous 6G R&D and build a globally competitive ecosystem.
Global Initiatives on 6G
| Region | Initiative |
|---|---|
| North America | NextG Alliance |
| Europe | 6G IA (6G Infrastructure Association / Hexa-X) |
| China | IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group; Future Forum |
- At the global standards level, the ITU-R IMT-2030 Framework (2023) defines the vision and capabilities for 6G, with work progressing in 3GPP for standardisation.
What is 6G?
- 6G is the sixth generation of mobile communication technology, expected to succeed 5G around 2030.
- Expected features: peak data rates of up to ~50 Gbps, ultra-low latency (0.1–1 ms), ubiquitous connectivity, AI-native networks, integrated sensing and communication, and use of millimetre-wave and sub-terahertz (above 100 GHz) spectrum.
- Applications: holographic communication, digital twins, autonomous systems, extended reality, precision healthcare and space-air-ground integrated networks.
Significance for India
- Standards-setting power: Participation in 6G standardisation ensures India is a rule-maker, not just a rule-taker in global telecom governance.
- Digital economy: 6G is expected to underpin the next wave of Industry 4.0, AI, IoT and smart infrastructure, supporting India's $1 trillion digital economy ambitions.
- Atmanirbhar Bharat: Indigenous R&D through TTDF and B6GA reduces dependence on foreign telecom equipment and IPR.
- Startup and innovation ecosystem: 5G Labs and academia-industry tie-ups build a skilled telecom talent pipeline.
- Strategic autonomy: Secure and interoperable 6G standards are vital for cybersecurity, data sovereignty and national security.
Challenges
- High R&D expenditure gap compared to China, the US and the EU.
- Spectrum availability and pricing for millimetre-wave and sub-THz bands.
- Semiconductor and chipset dependence on imports.
- Talent retention and industry-academia linkage gaps.
- Fragmented global standards due to geopolitical rivalry (e.g., competing blocs on 6G).
Related Policy and Legal Framework
- Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Telecommunications Act, 2023 (which replaces the 1885 Act framework).
- Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act, 1997.
- National Digital Communications Policy, 2018 – aims at 5G, IoT and broadband proliferation.
- National Telecom Policy and Make in India / PLI schemes for telecom equipment manufacturing.
Way Forward
- Scale up public funding for 6G R&D and create dedicated 6G testbeds.
- Fast-track spectrum roadmap for 6G bands.
- Deepen international collaboration with 3GPP, ITU and like-minded alliances for open, secure standards.
